Awesome Advocate – Cathy Olmsted

Awesome Advocate - Cathy Olmsted

Cathy Olmsted, a 2nd grade teacher and friend of Nick Roussos teaches at University School in Greeley, Colorado. She invited Nick to spend some time in her classroom, and he accepted without hesitation. The situation is a mutually beneficial relationship. Nick gets to help children with their learning, not only academic but also social and emotional development. Children get to know Nick, a man in a wheelchair who doesn’t speak but uses a communication device to talk. As they interact with him on a bi-monthly basis they learn to accept and benefit from seeing and working closely with someone very different than themselves. Nick, mostly dependent on others for his daily living, has the opportunity to help in an educational setting. He is the author of “Helping in Action”, soon to be released. This is his first book targeted for children and showing that anyone, anywhere can help if they put their mind to it! –Sue Kittel
